The 2010 Northwest Cup - UPDATE

The 2010 Northwest Cup was played in Portland over the weekend of June 5-6.  The annual competition brings together the best players of the three Pacific Northwest teams:  Portland, Seattle and Vancouver.  It was a very hard fought battle and all three teams were extremely competitive the entire weekend.

It came down to the last two matches that Seattle had to win in order to tie the number of matches won between Seattle and Portland.  It was Seattle's #2 Mixed Doubles team of Beto/Rachel vs. Portland's Nick/Carla and Seattle's #2 Women's Doubles team of Claudia/Lee vs.  Vancouver's Kathy/Frances and both matches were played simultaneously.  If Portland won the Mixed Doubles, then the Cup would be out of Seattle's reach.  The Mixed doubles finished first with Beto/Rachel taking it 8-3.  So then it was all riding on the Women's Doubles.  Unfortunately, Seattle could not overcome Vancouver and lost 6-8.

The final match standings:
Portland 24 (313 games)
Seattle 23 (317 games)
Vancouver 19 (291 games)

Portland won -- they hadn't won it since 1998 so they were due.

All of the long-time NW Cup players agreed that it was the closest competition among all three teams that they could remember and probably in NW Cup history.

Seattle's 2010 Northwest Cup team thanks everyone for their support on our quest this year.  Stay tuned because the 2011 Northwest Cup returns to Seattle in what will surely be another intense competition.
